Income While You Sleep: How to Put Your Money to Work
Why people invest money instead of leaving it in a current account, how it works, and what you need to think about first.
What does income while you sleep mean?
When you put money into a current account, it sits there. You can spend it whenever you want, which is useful, but it does not earn anything meaningful. If you leave one thousand euros there for a year, you still have one thousand euros.
Investing means putting your money into something that generates a return for you instead. That return might come from interest paid on a deposit, from a loan you have made to a business that pays you back with interest, from the price of something rising, or from dividends a company pays.
The phrase 'while you sleep' captures this nicely. You do not have to work for the income. You do not have to sell anything or negotiate or chase anyone.
This is not magic, though, and it is not without risk. The value of investments can go down as well as up, and you may get back less than you put in. Income is not guaranteed.
Why would you invest instead of just saving?
A current account gives you security and access. Your money is there, and you can use it.
Investing is a way to put that spare money to work. You are saying: I have this amount of money, I do not need it right now, and I would like it to earn something instead of sitting idle. Different investments earn in different ways and at different rates.
The catch is that money you invest is usually locked away for a while. A fixed-term deposit might tie your money up for months or years. A business loan is repaid on a schedule, not instantly.
Once you have accepted that trade-off—giving up instant access in exchange for the chance to earn—investing makes sense. It is a way to make your money work instead of letting it waste away in a current account.
What can you actually invest in on Investfora today?
Investfora offers four main things you can put your money into right now. Each works differently, each has its own risks, and each suit different reasons for investing.
Fixed-term deposits are the simplest. You transfer money to a bank for an agreed period—say, three months or a year—at an interest rate agreed upfront. The bank holds your money and pays you interest. Your dashboard shows exactly what you will get back and when.
Business lending is different. Real businesses that need to borrow list loans on the platform. Each listing shows how much they need, how long the loan lasts, how often they will repay you, what interest rate they are offering, and what secures the loan.
Crypto lets you buy and hold fifty different cryptocurrencies at live market prices. You can swap euros into crypto in seconds and swap back again whenever you want. The smallest trade is one euro, so you can start small. Crypto is volatile, meaning prices swing wildly and fast.
Trading gives you access to a full trading account with a broker. You can trade currencies, indices, shares, ETFs and commodities using the broker's platform. This is for people who want to make active trades, not just park money. It is the most active and the highest-risk option.
How do you get started: the practical steps
First, you open an account. Investfora is the platform of LIFT INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT SGEIC SA, authorised and supervised by the CNMV in Spain, register number 244. The process is online and takes minutes. You will need to identify yourself and provide the usual information.
Second, you transfer money in. The platform shows you a bank transfer reference in your dashboard. You make a standard bank transfer from your current account to Investfora using that reference. The first deposit must be at least two hundred and fifty euros.
Third, you decide what to do with it. Nothing is invested unless you instruct it. Your cash sits in your Investfora balance until you choose. You can then select what you want to put money into.
Fourth, you manage and monitor. Your dashboard shows all your investments, what each one is earning or costing, and when money comes back. You can add more money, take money out (depending on the investment type), or change what you are invested in.
What should you think about before you invest?
How much can you afford to lock away? This is the first question. Only invest money you know you will not need for bills, emergencies, or plans you have coming up.
How long can you leave it? Different investments suit different timeframes. A fixed-term deposit ties money up for a set period, which is fine if you do not need it then. Business loans have repayment schedules you can see upfront. Crypto and trading are more flexible but more volatile.
What is your attitude to risk? Some people can tolerate their money falling in value sometimes, because they believe it will recover and earn more over time. Others would lose sleep. Neither is wrong, but you need to know yourself. Deposits are lower risk and lower reward.
Do not invest money hoping to solve a problem. Do not borrow to invest, and do not invest emergency fund money. Investing is for money you have already, money you do not need, and money you can afford to see fall in value temporarily.
The reality of income while you sleep
Income while you sleep sounds like a promise. But the truth is both better and worse than it sounds. The better part is that it is real. Once you have put money into an investment, it genuinely does work for you without effort.
The worse part is that there is no guarantee. Markets move. Businesses fail. Crypto prices swing wildly. You might earn nothing, or you might lose money. The value of investments can go down as well as up, and you may get back less than you put in.
What investing is not is a shortcut to wealth or freedom. You cannot replace your salary with investment income unless you have a very large sum to start with. You will not retire early from the income on the amount most people can spare.
If that appeals to you, Investfora makes it simple. You move money from your current account into investments chosen by you. You see exactly what is happening. You stay in control.
Next steps
If this makes sense to you, open an account. It takes minutes, and you do not have to put money in right away. You can explore the platform, look at what deposits, loans and other investments are available, and take your time deciding what to do.
When you are ready, transfer in your first deposit of at least two hundred and fifty euros. Then choose what to put it into. Start small if you are unsure. You can add more money later as you become more comfortable.
Remember: the value of investments can go down as well as up, and you may get back less than you put in. But if you have money to invest and you want it to work for you, that is exactly what Investfora makes possible.
