Investing towards a goal: how to think about it and how Investfora works
Why people invest, what to think about first, and how to use Investfora to put your money to work.
Why people invest
Most people save money for something. A holiday next year. A car. A house deposit. A child's education. Money sitting in a current account earns nothing, so if you have time before you need it, you might put it somewhere that works for you.
Investing means putting money into something in the hope it will grow. That something could be a business loan that pays interest, a cryptocurrency that you might sell later for more, a bank deposit that earns a fixed rate, or shares and other traded assets. The trade-off is that you cannot touch the money instantly, and the value of some investments can fall as well as rise, meaning you might get back less than you put in.
The point of a goal is that it tells you two important things: how much you need, and when you need it. Those answers change what you should do with your money.
How your goal shapes what you invest in
If you need the money in six months, you will not want to risk it in something volatile. A fixed-term deposit from a bank, locked in for six months at a rate agreed up front, might suit you. You know exactly what you will get back and when.
If you need the money in five years, you have time to weather ups and downs. Business lending might appeal: real companies borrow at interest rates that reflect the risk they pose.
If you are investing money you do not need for ten years or more, and you can live with larger swings in value, you might consider cryptocurrencies or traded assets like shares and ETFs. These can move sharply in shorter periods, but the longer your time horizon, the more time you have for markets to move in your favour.
The closer your goal, the less risk you should usually take. The further away it is, the more time you have to recover from losses, so you might tolerate more.
What else to think about before you start
Ask yourself how much you could afford to lose. Investing is not borrowing. You put in money you actually have, and if the value falls, that loss comes from your own pocket. If losing that money would hurt your life, do not invest it. This is not a moral judgement; it is a practical one.
Think about whether you need this money in an emergency. If you do, keep emergency funds in a current account where you can reach them instantly. Investments on Investfora can take time to convert back to cash. A fixed-term deposit is locked in for its term. Business loans run for their agreed period.
Decide whether you understand what you are putting money into. Read the details on each listing. Fixed-term deposits are straightforward: a rate, a term, a bank. Business lending is more complex: you are lending to a real company with a real risk of default. Cryptocurrencies move on sentiment and news.
If you are borrowing to invest, stop. Borrowing amplifies losses as well as gains. If you cannot afford to lose the money, you cannot afford to invest it.
How money gets into your Investfora account
You transfer euros by bank transfer using a reference number shown in your dashboard. The money appears as Investfora cash usually within one to three working days, once it has been matched.
The first deposit into an account must be at least EUR 250. After that, you can deposit any amount. There is no upper limit on deposits, but each investment you make is shown separately on its own screen, so you can see exactly what you have in each one.
Your Investfora cash is simply your balance. Nothing is invested unless you instruct it. You choose what to put it into, how much of each, and when. That control is yours.
The four things you can invest in today
Fixed-term deposits are money placed with a European-authorised bank for an agreed term at a rate set upfront. Your money is covered by that country's deposit-guarantee scheme up to EUR 100,000 per person per bank. The dashboard shows what you earn each day and exactly what you get back at the end.
Business lending lets you lend to real companies. Each listing shows the risk grade, interest rate, loan amount, funding progress, term, repayment frequency, and what secures it. You choose which businesses and how much of each. You are taking real credit risk; if a business fails, you may not get your money back.
Cryptocurrency trading gives you access to fifty coins at live prices, swapped from euros in seconds and back again. You can buy fractions from as little as one euro. Crypto prices move sharply and frequently. The value can fall significantly.
Trading gives you a trading account with a broker, funded from your Investfora cash. You can trade currencies, indices, shares, ETFs and commodities on the broker's own platform. The platforms run on Windows, Android or a web trader that opens inside your account. Trading is active and can involve substantial losses.
How to start investing towards your goal
Open your Investfora account. The process takes minutes and you can do it on your phone. You will need proof of identity and address.
Make your first deposit of at least EUR 250. Your bank transfer reference is in your dashboard. The money usually arrives within one to three working days.
Read the details of what you want to invest in. For fixed-term deposits, check the bank, the rate and the term. For business lending, understand the risk grade, what the company does, and what backs the loan. For crypto or trading, make sure you understand the asset and the risks involved.
Decide how much to put into each investment. You do not have to use all your cash at once. You can spread it across several investments, or hold some as cash and invest it later. The choice is entirely yours.
Remember that the value of investments can go down as well as up, and you may get back less than you put in. This is not a gamble if you have thought about it carefully and chosen investments that match your goal and your ability to bear loss. It is a calculated decision.
What happens next
Once money is invested, you own it outright. For fixed-term deposits, you watch it earn day by day, and at maturity it returns to your Investfora cash. For business lending, you receive interest payments according to the loan terms, and the principal comes back at the end.
You can manage everything from your dashboard. Each investment is shown on its own screen. You can see what you have, what it is worth, what it has earned or lost, and when money is due back.
If you decide to close your account, any money in your Investfora cash can be withdrawn by bank transfer. Investments have to mature or be sold first. Money usually takes one to three working days to arrive in your bank account.
Open an account
Deposit euros when you are ready and choose what they do next. You can start with one thing and add others later.
